What does it mean to understand someone? What does it mean to be understood? Are we asking too much for others to understand us?
I think music is where I feel the most understood. It’s scary how strangers can seemingly understand my feelings and present them so eloquently and so beautifully. But is that just a superficial understanding, exploiting some of the most universal feelings?
Can anyone understand us? Is being understood something special, only reserved for a select few? Maybe we don’t give others enough opportunities to understand us.
It wasn’t until I stumbled upon Natalie Prass’ My Baby Don’t Understand Me that I felt 100% empathy. I understood completely without relating to the contents of the song. I could feel heartbreak Natalie was going through. Her voice rings just as clear as her meaning.
This is what I love about music.
Our love is like a long goodbye
We keep waiting for the train to cry
Because my baby don’t understand me
He don’t understand me anymore
Oh no, my baby don’t understand me anymore
Oh, what do you do when that happens?
Where do you go when the only home that you know is with a stranger?
