Book Review: The Years by Virginia Woolf

January 14, 2019 | Comments

The Hours by Virginia Woolf As the Pargiters, a middle-class English family, move from the oppressive confines of the Victorian home of the 1880s to the ‘present day’ of the 1930s, they are weighed down by the pressures of war, the social strictures of patriarchy, capitalism and Empire, and the rise of Fascism. Engaging with a painful struggle between utopian hopefulness and crippled with despair, the novel is a savage indictment of Virginia Woolf’s society, but its bitter sadness is relieved by the longing for some better way of life, where `freedom and justice’ might really be possible.

Book Blogger Hop is a weekly meme run by Coffee Addicted Writer. Every Friday, a question is posted for the book blog community to discuss. This week’s question is: What is your first book of the year? My first book of the year was The Years by Virginia Woolf. I’d totally talk about it but I have a blog post that will cover that in a couple days.

My 168 Hours

January 2, 2019 | Comments

A couple weeks ago, I read 168 Hours by Laura Vanderkam. Although I thought the book was a hot mess, there were some useful exercises in there. For example, one of the exercises was to record everything you did for an entire week. I love obsessively recording stats about my life so I jumped on it. Here’s the raw data (rounded to the nearest hour): Activity Hours Sleep 48 Work 47 Ray 24 Travel 15 Internet 8 Socialize 5 Movie 3 168 Hours 2 Emily 3 Washroom 2 Breakfast 2 Get Ready 1 Church 1 Netflix 1 Pray 1 Journal 1 Dinner 1 Read 1 Investing 0.

This week’s question is… Do you get any books for Christmas? If so, name the titles. I did not! It’s alright though. I haven’t received a book for Christmas in quite a while. Now that I think about it, I don’t recall ever getting a book for Christmas.

Book Blogger Hop is a weekly meme run by Coffee Addicted Writer. Every Friday, a question is posted for the book blog community to discuss. This week’s question is… Does your book club have a book exchange for the holidays or any other time during the year? If you don’t belong to a book club, do you think that would be something fun to do? Nope! I am part of a few “book clubs” at work but it mostly is just reading one non-fiction book that relates to our work (programming).
