Hours on Phone

Towards the end of the month I definitely had trouble with phone usage. There are certain apps that I couldn’t find myself getting off of. It’s hard because said apps are vital for communication.

Top 10 Artists

  1. L’Arc~en~Ciel
  4. ギルガメッシュ
  5. Coheed and Cambria
  6. Alexisonfire
  7. tricot
  8. downy
  9. HYDE
  10. My Chemical Romance

This month was really a “dive deep into nostalgia” kind of month. I decided I will slowly start to transition away from Spotify and have been listening to songs I’ve downloaded over the years. It’s a lot of Japanese music. One the most comforting things is knowing how some of these songs are still bangers after all these years.

Top 10 Albums

It kinda freaked me out knowing that this album is over 6 years old! I remember when it came out like yesterday. I was an active lurker in the DIR EN GREY Tumblr community at that time and I remember seeing the various PV teasers slowly come out. This album was really good but this was around the time I stopped paying attention to DIR EN GREY. I really need to catch up on their discography.

  2. KISS by L’Arc~en~Ciel

I thought ARCHE was old, KISS is over 13 years old. I still view this slbum as “pretty new”. Likewise to ARCHE, I kinda stopped following L’Arc~en~Ciel after this album. But it’s still so good. I was in a Discord call with some friends and 海辺 came on and I forgot I was muted and just belted out singing the chorus. I can’t believe I initially dismissed this album when it came out. Another artist’s discography that I need to catch up on.

  3. Tierra by L’Arc~en~Ciel

There’s a lot of Laruku on this list. Tierra has some of my favourite Laruku songs: All Dead, Blame, and Wind of Gold. To me, they haven’t aged a day but not so sure if that’s actually true.

This single was just made as a commercial for a women’s sports attire brand (thank you, capitalism) but it is hands down my favourite MAMAMOO song. Cosmic Girl produces some of the best songs. From the strings to the disco vibe to the groovy bass… Weirdly enough, one of my favourite parts is when Moonbyul, the rapper of the group, sings. It sounds so natural, she really should sing more!

  5. MUSIC by ギルガメッシュ

I’m still mourning the loss of ギルガメッシュ. It’s okay because they left behind this masterpiece of an album that I still can’t get enough of. This album is 12 years old. Y’all, I’m stuck in the past.

  6. True by L’Arc~en~Ciel

I told you that Laruku comes up a lot on this list. True is another one of those classic albums. Admittedly, not a lot of songs stand out on this album. I was about to list out songs that do stand out to me but then I realized that every single song stands out. Maybe that’s why it’s so hard to pick just a couple songs from this album, they’re all great. I think The Fourth Avenue Cafe is one of the top tier songs, however.

  7. Ark by L’Arc~en~Ciel

Really, I only like forbidden lover on this album. My #1 favourite song of all time. Overall, the album is great start to finish but it’s not really an album you can pick and choose certain songs to listen to.

  8. Recreation by acid black cherry

Yasu has a really unique voice that I don’t think I would tolerate outside of J-Rock. Recreation is just songs from like the 80’s that Yasu decided to cover with a slightly more updated sound. モノクローム・ヴィーナス (Monochrome Venus) is my favourite. The original is just SO 80’s, haha. Yasu did a great job with that one.

  9. 第七作品集『無題』 by downy

God damn, do I love downy. This album came out last year and it is so good. 砂上、燃ユ。残像 gives me chills every time. I really want to buy this album. Would love to listen to it front and back with super high quality. Hell, I want all their albums.

  10. The Insulated World by DIR EN GREY

Okay, technically I’ve started catching up to DIR EN GREY’s discography. The Insulated World came out not so long ago, just two years ago. I’ve been listening to it over and over again but sadly haven’t really been listening to it. I really need to sit down and pay attention.

Top 10 Songs

I pretty much explained why I love this single but god damn it’s so good.

  2. 砂上、燃ユ。残像 by downy

Another song I kinda explained. The chords of the acoustic guitar persisting throughout the entire song is hypnotizing. It just kinda hits you right from the beginning. And the electric guitar just screeching throughout. Fuck. A masterpiece.

This is just a feel good song. Choa era every time. I don’t care what people say, AOA is nothing without her. Okay, Choa is my bias so, like, obviously I’m biased. This song is just so sexy and cute at the same.

  4. LIFE by YUI

YUI recently appeared on the One Take YouTube channel and my heart melted. I immediately went to go listen to YUI songs. LIFE is my favourite one. YUI’s voice is unmatched. It’s so clear and pure.

  5. Young Buck by Braids

I’m sure I’ve written about this song before. I first heard this song in 2019 before it came out, live (remember when concerts were a thing?). It was such a bop. Once the chorus came in the whole crowd just started vibing.

  6. 마리아 by 화사

This song is everything. First listened to a cover done by Arlene of Angky and Arlene and I was like wow I need to know the original stat.

  7. Un deux by DIR EN GREY

I accidentally had this song on repeat for an hour when I meant to play the whole ARCHE album and I was like “I swear all the songs on ARCHE don’t sound the same.” I was just dumb, haha.

  8. Sariling Multo (Sa Panaginip) by IV of Spades

The Filipino rock scene seems to be doing pretty well. IV of Spades is definitely a band I’m keeping an eye on. This song came out last year and it’s such a bang. I think the lead singer said that COVID and quarantine makes people face their own ghosts and thus this song was born.

This song is sexy. I think Moonbyul singing has much to do with it. “Please, turn off the light.” I don’t know what it is about that line but god damn. This song is definitely international material but it’s definitely not K-Pop material so I get why it wasn’t a single. I want to see them sing this song live, though. PLEASE. MAMAMOO. PLEASE.

  10. ALONE EN LA VIDA by L’Arc~en~Ciel

I love the Latin flair in the guitar in this song. Another song I remember being iffy about when I first listened to it but it’s so good when I listen to it now.

January 2021 Spending

Rent was higher this month because I had to pay for rent at my current place and for the new place. Bless automatically siphoning part of my pay cheque to another account. Dipped into it to pay some bills because of the rent bloat. Like I said earlier, my friends convinced me to finally buy Tequila Sunrise hence why hobbies is so high.

Books Read

None. :( I’m currently reading The Secret Garden but I can’t say I’ve been reading it consistently.

January was low key. Towards the end of the month (due to nature) I started to taper off a bit. I need to figure out a way to keep my moment even when the moon makes me crazy.
