Book Blogger Hop is a weekly meme run by Coffee Addicted Writer. Every Friday, a question is posted for the book blog community to discuss. This week’s question is:
Is there anything that drives you bonkers when you’re reading a book and makes you want tell the author a thing or two?
Definitely. But they all escape me right now. I guess for me, it’s how authors write characters. I get how not all characters are supposed to be likable but sometimes the authors make it really hard to do so. What I dislike the most are cheesy tropes. For example, the lonely and brooding but extremely hot and badass character is definitely one that drives me bonkers. It reminds me of the video game character trope of the main character who is a white male with a shaved head who just needs to save the world. I think the world has enough of such characters. The best author can make unlikable characters relatable. Or at least, can make me empathize with them. If they’re a tropey character, however, that makes it harder.
I’m not sure what other things that irk me. Pretty much everyone hates Mary Sues, that doesn’t need to be talked about.
Haruki Murakami is an author I rag on quite a bit even though I read a lot of his works. I adore his quirky, weird imagination but sometimes I loathe his main characters. They seem devoid of personality and they all objectify women in the weirdest ways. It’s very specific but man. Sometimes I wish I could tell Murakami to try something else for once.
