Konmari Step 1: Clothes

Feb 5, 2019

I’ve been trying to use the KonMari method for about two years now. In my previous attempts, I’ve managed to get through my clothes and books and then I stop there.

Since I’m planning to move out soon (that’s another blog post entirely), I decided now is the best time to downsize. The bulk of my possessions are clothes and thankfully that’s the first step to KonMari.

All my clothes piled up

So I gathered up all my clothes and put them on a pile on my bed. In the background of the photo, you can see me watching the KonMari reality TV show on Netflix, Tidying Up with Marie Kondo, and my pomeranian stuffed toy, Jesus.

I spent a couple hours picking up every single item and deciding whether or not it sparked joy. A lot of my clothes don’t spark joy. And a lot of them didn’t even fit me anymore or were just too old. A lot of the clothes I didn’t use anymore either. This time around I was definitely a little more ruthless in my “joy” threshold.

By the time I was done, I realized I kept a lot of sweaters and cardigans. I also kept a couple of button ups that I like to wear to work. When I went through my clothes years ago, I kept all of my dresses but this time I discarded a few that were starting to fade.

The clothes I'm getting rid of

At the end of it all, I filled two laundry baskets with clothes. My closet is surprisingly still full but my drawers definitely do not have as much in it. I have 6 drawers and now only 3 of them are filled.

The second category to KonMari next is books. I did an initial pass through my books years ago and I got rid of mostly all of them. There are still a shelf full of books that I’m not sure if I’ll part with. Books are definitely harder to get rid of. That’s this future me’s problem.
