Day 11 of 100 Days to Offload
I’ve been watching a lot of 恋は雨上がりのように, or, After the Rain. It’s definitely a great anime, very sweet and wholesome, despite being about a 17-year-old who falls in love with a 45-year-old man who is her boss. Definitely on of my favourite anime!
One of the main things MattVsJapan stresses about immersive learning is to never get bored. If you’re getting bored, the more likely you are to give up. Rewatching some of my favourite anime definitely makes things easier!
My initial strategy was to watch anime without any subs, in Japanese or in English. However, I keep hearing around the language communities that exercising your reading skills helps language learning immensely. There is Animelon that has raw subs available for streaming, however, not a lot of anime I was interested in is on Animelon. Thankfully, through the power of community, I found Kitsuneko which has a whole directory of Japanese subtitles. I was excited to see that 恋は雨上がりのように was available! I use VLC so it was quite easy to add the subtitle track. The timing was off though, I had to fix the synchronization a bit but once again, VLC made that easy for me!
What I like about Japanese subs:
- Can get some reading practice in
- Reinforce kanji learned from RRTK
- If there is hiragana, hearing those spoken aloud is immensely helpful
- I have the subtitle file so if there’s a kanji I don’t know, I can just copy and paste it into jisho.
I don’t have a lot of hard drive space, I can only really store two anime series on my disk at a time. Maybe it’s time to upgrade my storage? I do have a 2TB hard drive lying around… Not an SSD though, unfortunately.
Anyway. Another Japanese win for today.
I have a Hobonichi planner and every day there’s a little blurb at the bottom in Japanese. Today’s caught my eye because GLAY was mentioned. I took a crack at translating it. The only thing that tripped me up was what the father…
娘: お父さんは, Perfumeとお母さんだったらどっちが好き?
父: え~? お母さんかな。照れちゃうなあ。
娘: お母さんは, GLAYとお父さんだったらどっちが好。。。
Daughter: Dad, Perfume or mom, who do you like more?
Dad: Eh? Mom? I feel awkward now.
Daughter: Mom, GLAY or dad, who you…
ーFrom Today’s Heartbreak
It was cool recognizing these words and kanji. お父さん is a word that I know solely because I added Japanese subtitles to 恋は雨上がりのように. Thank goodness one of the main characters is a father!
I found the blurb on the Hobonichi company’s twitter too. Here’s me showing off the Yomichan firefox extension too. I didn’t understand the last two parts of the sentence. “One thousand knife???stab!!!” I think that’s all I need to know though, haha.
