My Morning Routine

Last Modified:

Day 11 of #100DaysToOffload

I've gotten to the point where my morning routine is almost a necessity for a good start to my day. If I miss doing my morning routine (usually by sleeping in), the rest of the day I just have a nagging feeling in the back of my mind.

Some of the things that I do in my routine are things that I want to do everyday and the morning is just the best time for it. If I don't do them in the morning, they might get done at all.

That being said, here is my current routine:

  • Wake up
  • Do hygiene stuff
  • Make my bed
  • Weigh myself
  • Record my weight
  • Go through my planner and see what I need to do for the day with some time blocking
  • Check off any tasks that I did yesterday but forgot to check off
  • Write a journal entry in my Hobonichi 5 Year Journal
  • Do a quick sketch  from /r/SketchDaily
  • Draw a tarot card for the day and reflect on it's meaning and if I could apply it to the rest of my day
  • Check Habitica
  • Brew some tea
  • Go through my Anki flashcards
  • If it's a work day, get my Mac Book set up and boot it up
  • Start my day!

This whole process takes around an hour to an hour and a half. Sometimes I do get distracted but I try to wake up early enough (at least two hours before work starts) to get it all done.

There are some things that are some recent additions, such as planning my day with time blocking. After taking part in the Habit Reframe Program I took this tip for my own. I do use pomodoros so I outline when and how many pomodoros I would like to do. Planning is half the battle, though. I still encounter some resistance getting started once the time comes.

Something I would like to add to my morning routine are incorporating some more mindfulness. My daily tarot card draw is quite a meditative process but it's not exactly the kind of mindfulness that I am aiming for.

Another thing that I would like to do is add something physical. I already spend so much of my day sitting down. After each pomodoro I try to stretch and walk around but I would like to do a little more. I'm thinking about adding some yoga but maybe I need to wake up a tad earlier to fit that in.

To anyone reading this, do you have a morning routine? Why or not? Do you want to have one? Is your current routine your ideal routine?
