My Valentine This Year

Day 14 of #100DaysToOffload

"Who's your Valentine?" My mother asked me slyly over the weekend. My parents and brother were over for lunch, something they do every two weeks or so ever since the pandemic started. Every time they come over my mother likes to inquire about my relationship status.

Unphased, I automatically responded with, "Zuko."

To those who don't know, Zuko is my cat. He is a pandemic cat AKA a cat that I've adopted during the pandemic. There has been discouragement over adopting pets over the pandemic but I've always wanted a cat and I thought there was it was as good a time as any. I live alone and being isolated from everyone was a bit daunting. So, in late May 2020, I brought Zuko home.

Some people ask me if Zuko is named after Danny Zuko from Grease. He is not! He is named after Zuko from the animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender. He was already named Zuko when I got him (I will admit that I may have adopted him because Zuko is hands down my favourite character in Avatar). They named him that because Zuko in the series has a scar above his eye and when the shelter received Zuko the cat, his eye was also injured. As I got to know him, I realized how much Zuko is like his namesake: he can be hot tempered and a bit spoiled, hah!

I really love Zuko! He has made pandemic days a lot easier to go through. Sometimes he can be a lot to handle but it's all worth it. He's become a member of my family and I will do anything to keep him healthy, happy, and safe.
